Today is Halloween. It's also other things, but you all are pretty much focused on Halloween.
A very good friend of mine told me what her costume was going to be. Leather skirt, leather halter top. "I'm going as a slut."
Because I know how this all works, I asked her what kind of slut she was going to be. Because that is a question that can honestly be asked after... let's say 1998?
She told me that there didn't seem to be any point in masquerading the main point of being a slut. Being a slutty nurse, a slutty Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a slutty Hermione... none of that mattered. The point was to be a slut without additional accouterments.
I have no real and considered opinion on this as I tend to hide myself away when holidays come up. But there is a very real and honest discussion to be had behind this brief exchange of a provocative idea. Enough to suggest that... hey ladies, next year maybe you go as Buffy. Or Emma Goldman. Or Oprah. Or Kali, the destroyer of evil forces. Not a slutty version of them, just as them and what they mean to the world.
