A treaty of annexation between the United States and the Republic of Hawaii is signed but not ratified by the US Senate until a year later. It would take another 62 years for the territory to become the 50th state, at which point US Government officials agreed that they should just stop at fifty because it was a nice round number and looked good on a flag.
