American politician William S. Groesbeck dies. He was one of President Andrew Johnson's counsel during the historic impeachment trial. Andrew Johnson was, of course, Abraham Lincoln's successor and famously vetoed legislation that would extend civil rights and financial support to former slaves. That wasn't why he was being impeached, but it helped to set the stage.
Johnson was acquitted by one vote, so I suppose Bill did his job. And winning is all that matters.
