Irish immigrant Mary O'Connell dies. She was a nun and served as a nurse on the front lines of the civil war in her late-forties. She was known as "The Angel of the Battlefield" and showed no bias in treating soldiers, whether rebel, yankee, black or white, saving many from the horror of amputation.
