The first African Americans are elected to the House of Representatives. And all of them are from southern states during the years of Reconstruction.
Seven years later, all that is undone by the Rutherford B. Hayes administration's Compromise, when federal troops are withdrawn from the South and those states are allowed to dictate voting policy, which includes the disenfranchisement of black voters as well as poor whites via new poll tax requirements, strict residency requirements (gerrymandering), and subjective literacy tests.
147 years later... there are 52 African Americans, 45 Hispanic or Latino, 18 Asian descent, and 2 Native Americans serving in Congress. 109 are women. Seven are LGBTQ.
418 are white.
426 are men.
528 are "straight."
485.245 are Christian (?).
The average age is 59.8.
Out of 535 members, 291 identify as Republican.
One might consider this "progress." One might also consider that the number of jackasses we have as President also numbers one. Food for thought. #vote2018
