*Right-off-the-bat disclaimer: This is an entertainment blog. I find interesting tidbits in history and comment on them in a hopefully humorous way. Sometimes I will find a parallel within the current political landscape because I find it amusing and/or sad. And while I understand that it could be considered provocative, there is no intent to incite or make a misguided and not-well-thought out call to action. Unfortunately, because of the aforementioned political landscape, I feel compelled to write a disclaimer such as this, because as we continue on through what seems like uncharted territory, it is difficult to discern whether or not modes of discourse within the media and among humorists and bloggers will be affected. And if so, then in what way? I can say that a year ago, it wouldn't have even occurred to me to explain myself in this way. Even three months ago it wasn't a consideration. Right now, there is an impulse toward clarity when I find something to riff on like today's fun fact. I doubt seriously that it will come up again, but for now I'm choosing to firmly state again that this is an entertainment blog and nothing besides.
And now that I've shone a ridiculously huge spotlight on today's post that will probably make it not seem worth the time and trouble at all--I mean seriously, there's no way to follow this and have it be the highlight of your day unless I include a picture of kittens in a basket...
I'm going to include a picture of kittens in a basket. That will make everything better. Let's get to it.
ON THIS DAY IN (SOMEWHAT INACCURATE) HISTORY... January 24th, 41...
Roman Emperor Caligula is assassinated. Because that's how ancient Romans dealt with over-the-top, insane, ostentatious despots. GOOD NIGHT, EVERYBODY! DRIVE SAFE! LOOK AT THE KITTENS!
